Why is the LAIR offering Trip Insurance now? Since LAIR’s Cancellation Policy has significantly changed (refer to LAIR’s website), campers are encouraged to purchase trip insurance. As a service, LAIR is providing information from Meyer and Associates, a partner of the Lair of the Golden Bear and Cal Alumni Association. Two travel insurance plans are being offered through Travel Insured International (TII) as options to consider as you search for trip protection.

What are the benefits of purchasing Trip Insurance?  Trip Insurance provides you with a choice of individual travel insurance plans to meet your needs and budget. The plans cover:

  • Trip cancellations or interruptions
  • Trip delays
  • Medical expenses, including emergency medical evacuation
  • Delayed, lost, or stolen baggage
  • Accidental death and dismemberment
  • Cancel for Any Reason reasons (some plans) – Please note that insurance must be purchased within 21 days of the date of your emailed tent confirmation from the Lair to be eligible for the Cancel for Any Reason benefits included in some plans and coverage for cancellations due to pre-existing health conditions.

How can I apply for the Trip Insurance coverage?

How do I know the cost for each camper being insured on the LAIR trip? Cost is based on LAIR’s rates (see below):

When will the confirmation email be sent from LAIR? (this starts the 21 day window for Cancel For Any Reason and cancellations due to pre-existing health conditions)  The initial tent confirmation email will be sent on March 14th.  For those who make a deposit later in the year, your email confirmation is used to start the 21 day window.

Does the Trip Insurance cover the tent and everyone in it? Only campers that purchase the Trip Insurance coverage are covered. Just because someone in the tent has purchased the Insurance does not mean everyone in that tent is covered. They each must purchase coverage in order to be covered.

Will I get a full refund for the cost of my trip if there is a California wildfire?

  • If the LAIR camp closes operations due to a wildfire, they will provide a refund. Historically, LAIR has only closed operations when ordered to close operations.
  • If the LAIR camp does not close, you can obtain a refund contingent upon the type of Trip Insurance coverage you obtained (Cancel For Any Reason).

To file a claim with Travel Insured International (underwritten by US Fire):

You should be prepared to provide your plan number as it appears on your Confirmation of Benefits.

Once you submit notice of your claim, you will receive a claim package that provides the forms and instructions you need to complete your claims submission. Be sure to keep all documentation that may be needed to validate your claim —invoices, receipts, tickets, brochures, and all proofs of payment. You may also need to provide a statement from the airline, cruise, common carrier, or travel coordinator confirming the details of your claim.

If your claim is the result of a sickness, injury, or death (including that of a traveling companion, family member or business partner) additional documentation may be required, including documentation detailing hospital admission and discharge dates, copies of itemized bills, statements from medical providers or attending physicians, medical coverage provided by other insurance plans, authorization for release of medical information, and a death certificate, if applicable. Call your doctor or airline, if required, to begin the process.

To expedite your claim, make sure your claim forms are complete. Be sure to provide all necessary documentation with your submission. Once your claim forms are submitted, Travel Insured will send your travel supplier a Coordinators Statement that must be completed and returned by your travel supplier before your claim can be reviewed. You can review the status of your claim online at any time or contact a Claims representative at the number above to review the status of your claim.
